Man, child fled from crash into Newport Starbucks

starbucksNEWPORT BEACH – A man crashed into a Starbucks shop Thursday night, then fled while holding a small child, officials said.

Newport Beach police said they arrested Johnny Miguel Martinez, 33, of Tustin, as a suspect in the crash.

No one was inside the store when the crash occurred, but Newport Beach police and Orange County sheriff’s deputies began searching for after reports of a man fleeing from the crash, said Jennifer Manzella, spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Police Department.

Officers were called after the crash was reported at about 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Campus Drive and MacArthur Boulevard, Manzella said. Witnesses reported seeing a man carrying a small child at the time.

Deputies and officers spotted a man a short time later holding a 3-year-old child, she said.

The child was taken to Hoag Hospital in Irvine, Manzella said, with apparent injuries to his nose and mouth.
