Pedestrian hit, killed in Newport Beach was 81-year-old man
NEWPORT BEACH – An 81-year-old pedestrian was killed and a driver suspected of DUI was taken into custody after a crash along Pacific Coast Highway Thursday night, police said.
The crash occurred near Morning Canyon in Corona del Mar about 9:30 p.m., said Sgt. Corey Wolik of the Newport Beach Police Department.
Details of how the crash occurred were under investigation Friday, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene after officers arrived, Wolik said.
He was identified by the coroner’s office as Edward Salkin, an 81-year-old man from Corona del Mar.
Officers believe Salkin was hit by a truck being driven by Robert John Greaney, 23, of Costa Mesa.
Greaney was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI causing bodily injury, Wolik said.
According to arrest logs, Greaney was taken to county jail to be booked Friday morning.
